Teaching fashion arts and design as a whole needs field training, including human interaction and touching fabrics, as well as marketing, business management and more – Stefania Valenti, the first woman to hold the position of General Manager of The institute since its founding in 1935 Digitalization and social networking have been a means of communication with students during the Corona pandemic in all branches

When Stefania Valenti joined the Marangoni Institute of Design and Fashion in November 2019 as General Manager, her first decision was to open a new branch in Dubai. A decision that will undoubtedly increase, but also expand its responsibilities, given that the Institute has 9 other branches spread over 3 continents, all under the direct control and management of the headquarters in Milan.
She was ready for the challenge; She is the first woman to hold this post since the founding of the institute in 1935 and for this reason she knows very well that all eyes will be on her in anticipation of her achievements. What she did not expect, her inauguration would coincide with the “Corona” pandemic. The least that can be said is that time was not in her favor, especially since the teaching of fashion arts and design as a whole is not limited to theory, but requires field training involving human interaction and touching fabrics, as well as marketing. business management and others.
Stefania explains that waiting for the crisis to pass or the freezing of the opening idea planned for next September was out of the question. Much research and investigation has actually been conducted, and he confirmed that Dubai is a fertile ground and is eager to embrace an institute of this weight. The importance of every fashion capital in the world is measured by its academic institutes, as it is the fuel that supplies it with its creative power and gives graduates their opportunities to work.
She says she was surprised that the region did not yet have a high school for fashion and design education and is known for her passion for everything new and elegant. A survey conducted by a consulting firm from the region that had hired him to test the market and its readiness for the project, with a group of potential and fashion-interested students, assured him that the name “Marangoni” was known for a . large segment of them. Not only that, but it is respected without having to promote it. She comments: “I do not hide from you that the positive results of the survey encouraged me more to continue with the implementation of the project, despite the difficulties.” It is worth noting that the institute has so far produced four generations of herds from 5 continents and was the start of more than 45,000 professionals in the luxury industry, including Domenico Dolce, Alessandro Sartori, Paula Cadimartori, Gilda Ambrosio, Julie de Libran and Nicola Brugnano . Each year it welcomes around 4,700 students from 107 countries on its campuses located between Milan (School of Fashion and Design), Florence (School of Fashion and Art), Paris, London, Mumbai, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Miami.
Stefania notes that she has not encountered any significant logistical difficulties. The only problem was the pandemic, which changed the world as a whole, and the fashion landscape and education in particular, in terms of imposing new tools for communicating with students. Digitalization was his weapon, to protect the face on the one hand and to combat its negative effects on the other. I adapted it quickly to create an educational model that keeps pace with the times. “The only way for me was to completely change the trend by investing in technology to ensure the continuity of distant classes and consequently the continuity of our programs and projects,” she says.
As for Dubai’s choice, it did not come out of nowhere. to communicate seriously with the Ministry of Culture to have cooperation and projects in the future regarding the specific needs of this market.and our students but the tradition that the institute follows in opening a new institute is to be located in an area where there is a network international fashion brands or companies over the years, in addition to businessmen interested in investing in the fashion industry so that students have real job opportunities after graduation. ” On this basis, 9 institutes were opened worldwide, all with the same DNA, the same academic path and approach, which will be adopted in academic curricula, preparatory courses lasting over three years and postgraduate courses lasting one. year dedicated to fashion design, tailoring, interior design and Visible design. All this while offering opportunities to undertake training courses in different parts of the world that enable the student to gain more experience.
“All this is taking into account the culture imposed by the environment in which we are, of course,” explains Stefania. This was an important and sensitive point that was studied from all sides. It is true that students tend to gain their skills in an international environment, and in Italy in particular, to immerse themselves in the experience of what is known as “Made in Italy”, but translate this concept into the local language. is an essential element, and therefore the lessons at the Dubai branch will be intertwined with an “Arabic touch” that helps create new symbols for the future of the luxury market in the Middle East and build a more regulated system and most popular fashion.
