Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, received a report submitted by Dr. Mahmoud Saqr, President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, on the project to support the production of home respirators that the academy is carrying out under the name BioVENT Series A. The report said that the project is the result of a fruitful cooperation between the Ministry of Higher Education and research through the High Council of University Hospitals as a leading partner in clinical trials, the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology as the main sponsor of the project, the Arab Organization for Industrialization as a manufacturing partner, and Biobusiness Medical Devices, one of the specialized technology development companies in the design and manufacture of electronic medical devices and the only one operating in this field in the Middle East and Africa.
The report showed that the technical phases of project completion began with the signing of a protocol between the Arab Organization for Industrialization and Biobusiness to find innovative solutions to tackle the Corona pandemic, and to find a solution in particular to the problem of respiratory failure and the Academy of Science and Technology Research launched the “Apply Your Idea” program in April 2020.
The Biobusiness proposal to design a high-flow oxygen device as the first class of respirators was approved, then launched the prototype of the high-flow oxygen device and received approval from the Armed Forces Medical Services and the Equipment Calibration approval. Medical Laboratory at the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University, followed by conducting clinical trials at Cairo University Hospitals under the supervision of the High Council of University Hospitals and obtaining conditional approval by the Egyptian Medicines Authority as the first approval of this type of for this kind. the device, issued by the Egyptian Medical Authority, then launched the second model of the device to start the process of converting the first sample into a usable product and producing the first ready-made industrial model A, where the tests were performed required. to evaluate it, to start the stages of implementation of the current production, to announce the delivery of the first 50 devices to the Unified Procurement Authority for distribution to university hospitals in April 2022.
The report adds that the project plan aims to design an easy-to-transport respirator, suitable for work in all environments, whether field hospitals, routine rooms or intensive care, and can be used at home. The manufacturing process of the device is in stages, starting with high flow oxygen equipment, then penetrating and penetrating and paying attention to quality and elegance in design.
The BioVENT A series device contains a heavy-duty fan that operates for up to 40,000 operating hours and contains a nebulizer or nebulizer for use in the form of a suction mist during treatment with the device, as well as works with high-flow technology such as distribution with high speed, similar to the technology used in American Vapotherm devices. It supports penetrating breathing modes similar to the V60 devices manufactured by the Dutch company Philips and supports penetrating breathing modes similar to the PB560 device technology manufactured by the American company Medtronic.
The report adds that the device offers the possibility of automatic control of fio2 or manual control, and is supported by a battery that operates for up to 6 hours and is equipped with an external humidifier and a bacterial respiratory filter, in addition to the advantages of disassembly and easy installation of suction and extraction valves, which are useful in preventing infection and easy sterilization.
The report noted the high economic feasibility of this project, in providing locally produced respirators, as well as avoiding the negative effects of rising global prices on the level of medical services provided to the Egyptian patient, especially with crises with which faces the world like e.g. The Corona Equipment Pandemic in the country is a golden opportunity for Egypt in terms of achieving self-sufficiency, lowering the import bill and the possibility of exporting to many countries suffering from shortage of breathing apparatus, such as African and Central Asian countries.
Saqr explained that Egypt is the first country in the Middle East and Africa to produce respirators with 100% Egyptian technology and that the final product is now available for use in hospitals and serves patients efficiently, showing to work to walk ahead in production development. of apparatus to cover the categories of respirators which includes 3 types: high flow oxygen apparatus, penetrating breathing apparatus and penetrating breathing apparatus, after obtaining the required approvals, noting the efforts made by the Academy for the implementation of long and complex stages of obtaining approvals for this type of equipment by communicating with the responsible agencies from the Ministry of Health and Services Medical staff in the armed forces and many experts, as well as cooperation with engineers with different specializations, the device represents an Egyptian patent and work . his registration is underway.
