Emirates Food Bank announced the launch of the “One Million Surplus Meals” campaign, which aims to provide nutritional support to those in need. He also announced that the campaign joined the “One Billion Meals” initiative, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai, to provide food aid to the poor and the needy in 50 countries.

The campaign also offers an innovative solution for the transformation of food waste, which is not suitable for consumption, after their classification into organic fertilizer and biofuel from processed cooking oils in collaboration with the initial company “Relube”.

The “Food Suplus” campaign includes 4 sub-initiatives, namely “Kitchens of Goodness”, the collection of surplus food prepared and suitable for consumption from breakfast buffets, the Ramadan basket for fruits and vegetables and the Ramadan Meer.
Khair Kitchens focuses on gaining surplus food in cooperative societies, supermarkets and retail stores. Also collaborates with a range of central kitchens.
The working model of this sub-initiative is based on collecting the necessary components for the preparation of specific foods as they are packaged and sent by the initiative partners to the Emirates Food Bank warehouse, which sends them to the central kitchen, where the food is prepared and then distributed to needy families and individual workers.
As for the initiative to collect surplus food prepared and suitable for consumption from the breakfast buffet, it cooperates with hotels in accordance with the principle of “preservation of ash” to ensure that fresh food prepared by hotel chefs not to be abused and not used, in order to be packaged in meals stored in a healthy and safe way, to preserve its nutrients, and then distributed to the beneficiaries, in cooperation with the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities.
This initiative also offers an innovative and quality solution for food waste that is not suitable for consumption, and turns them after being processed by the development company of fertilizers and recycling “Relube” into biofuel from processed cooking oils and an organic fertilizer that is useful in fertilizing green spaces and crops.
According to company statistics, the surplus of one million meals can cover an area of 1.25 million square meters of agricultural land with organic fertilizer, avoid landfills, equivalent to 625,000 kilograms of waste and provide 160,000 liters of biofuel.
Meanwhile, the Ramadan Meer initiative collects staple foods from cooperatives, supermarkets and retail stores in the bank’s warehouses, and then packs them in baskets containing the basic food needed to prepare meals and distributes them to beneficiaries.
World figures show that 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted every year, while the total value of this food waste is one trillion dollars, while the disposal of surplus food costs about 410 billion dollars a year, and the indirect consequences of this crisis are impoverishment. of more water resources, agricultural land and labor, climate pollution with emissions, and a quarter of the food lost each year can feed about 870 million people.
