Russian state-owned nuclear power company Rosatom unveiled developments in Egypt’s El Dabaa nuclear power plant project, through which Cairo plans to generate clean electricity and increase the share of clean energy in the electricity mix to about 42% by in 2030.

In an exclusive statement to Energy, Rosatom’s CEO in the Middle East and North Africa, Alexander Voronkov, confirmed that the giant Egyptian project would continue without delay.
He said, “The project is progressing according to the specified schedule and preparatory work is currently being carried out on site, including the construction of infrastructure facilities and a seaport to receive heavy and large equipment for the station.”
He explained that the design teams from the Egyptian and Russian sides had done a great job, preparing all the required license documents, which enabled the submission of the complete package of documents required for the issuance of the construction permit for the first unit. and second. at the factory to the regulatory authority at the end of June 2021, as well as submit the package of documents for modules 3 and 4 to the organizer on December 30, 2021, ahead of schedule.
Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant Licenses

He added that the Egyptian and Russian sides are making efforts to ensure that the project complies with all the technical requirements and internationally approved standards of nuclear safety, recognized by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
He said: “Currently, the Russian VVER-1200 nuclear reactors belonging to the third generation developed 3+, which were selected for use at the Dabaa nuclear power plant, are the latest and most advanced reactors in terms of safety, so Egypt will receive the safest nuclear power plants, which will be built on the basis of the latest technologies successfully applied in Russia and other countries as well.

Information about Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant
The Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant is being built in the city of El Dabaa in Governor Matrouh on the Mediterranean coast, about 300 km northwest of Cairo, to become one of the first nuclear power plants in the Middle East and North Africa, and the first power. plants of this species in Egypt.
The engineering department of the Russian state-owned nuclear power company Rosatom is responsible for the design and construction of the plant.

As part of the implementation of the program for the localization of nuclear technology and the introduction of new industries, the project will provide extensive capabilities for local Egyptian companies depending on the nature of the business, as it is planned to increase the percentage of their role from a minimum of 20.% during the construction phase of the first electricity unit, minimum 35% during the construction of the fourth unit.
The Egyptian nuclear power plant is a stable and clean source of electricity, which does not produce any emissions of carbon dioxide during operation, and thus will contribute to achieving the goals of the climate plan.
Annual greenhouse gas emissions in Egypt are expected to decrease by more than 14 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent; Thanks to the Dabaa nuclear power station.
