Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant Developments … and technology that puts Egypt in third place (special)

Russian state-owned nuclear power company Rosatom unveiled developments in Egypt’s El Dabaa nuclear power plant project, through which Cairo plans to generate clean electricity and increase the share of clean energy in the electricity mix to about 42% by in 2030.

Nuclear power plants have been an important source of low-carbon base electricity for at least 60 years, and these projects link countries along with long-term commitments to ensure nuclear safety.

Successful cooperation relations between Russia and Egypt in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy extend to several decades. Currently, the project to build the Dabaa nuclear power plant is one of the main joint projects between the two countries and the two sides. are strictly committed to its implementation in accordance with the will of the leaders of the two countries.

In an exclusive statement to Energy, Rosatom’s CEO in the Middle East and North Africa, Alexander Voronkov, confirmed that the giant Egyptian project would continue without delay.

He said, “The project is progressing according to the specified schedule and preparatory work is currently being carried out on site, including the construction of infrastructure facilities and a seaport to receive heavy and large equipment for the station.”

He explained that the design teams from the Egyptian and Russian sides had done a great job, preparing all the required license documents, which enabled the submission of the complete package of documents required for the issuance of the construction permit for the first unit. and second. at the factory to the regulatory authority at the end of June 2021, as well as submit the package of documents for modules 3 and 4 to the organizer on December 30, 2021, ahead of schedule.

Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant Licenses

In his statements to “Energy”, Alexander Voronkov confirmed that “after obtaining construction permits from the supervisory body,” both parties will be able to start the current planned construction work during the basic construction period. “

The Nuclear Power Plant Authority expects the issuance of licenses in the second half of this year.

According to Rosatom’s chief executive in the Middle East and North Africa, Alexander Voronkov, “the first pouring of concrete into the foundation of the first generating unit will represent the most important event that will mark the start of basic period construction work.”

He added that the Egyptian and Russian sides are making efforts to ensure that the project complies with all the technical requirements and internationally approved standards of nuclear safety, recognized by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

He said: “Currently, the Russian VVER-1200 nuclear reactors belonging to the third generation developed 3+, which were selected for use at the Dabaa nuclear power plant, are the latest and most advanced reactors in terms of safety, so Egypt will receive the safest nuclear power plants, which will be built on the basis of the latest technologies successfully applied in Russia and other countries as well.

In terms of nuclear safety and security, they are provided by the use of a mix of active and passive safety systems (active and passive) at the plant.

The El-Dabaa project is implemented taking into account the natural and climatic characteristics of the region, and takes into account all possible risks associated with external influence, and the station will be fully protected from the risk of human error, according to statements by Alexander Voronkov. to “Energy”.

Information about Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant

The Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant is being built in the city of El Dabaa in Governor Matrouh on the Mediterranean coast, about 300 km northwest of Cairo, to become one of the first nuclear power plants in the Middle East and North Africa, and the first power. plants of this species in Egypt.

The engineering department of the Russian state-owned nuclear power company Rosatom is responsible for the design and construction of the plant.

All 4 units to generate electricity in the power plant will be equipped with pressurized water reactors of the type VVER-1200 of the third generation developed “3+” and the latest, each with a capacity of 1200 megawatts.

Once operational, the plant will generate large amounts of electricity for Egypt, thus making a significant contribution to the country’s electricity mix, as the weight of the Dabaa nuclear power plant in Egypt’s electricity generation is expected to reach about 10%.

The technology of Russian nuclear reactors approved for use at the El Dabaa power plant is the newest of its kind, however it has been successfully and reliably applied to 5 power generating units for some time, 4 of which are in Russia and one in Belarus.

During the construction period of the nuclear power plant, the value added to Egypt’s GDP from the project implementation will be approximately $ 4 billion per year (i.e., about 1% of the country’s GDP).

In addition to the plant ‘s contribution to the stability of the Egyptian energy system, the project will create many new job opportunities at all stages of the facility’ s life cycle, including the involvement of supply chain companies.

The total number of workers at the peak of construction and installation works will exceed 25,000 people, more than 11,000 of them are specialists and it is planned that in the construction phase 70% of workers from the local population will be employed.

As part of the implementation of the program for the localization of nuclear technology and the introduction of new industries, the project will provide extensive capabilities for local Egyptian companies depending on the nature of the business, as it is planned to increase the percentage of their role from a minimum of 20.% during the construction phase of the first electricity unit, minimum 35% during the construction of the fourth unit.

The Egyptian nuclear power plant is a stable and clean source of electricity, which does not produce any emissions of carbon dioxide during operation, and thus will contribute to achieving the goals of the climate plan.

Annual greenhouse gas emissions in Egypt are expected to decrease by more than 14 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent; Thanks to the Dabaa nuclear power station.
